In order that boots fit well, they must:
- Be long enough to allow wiggling of the toes. This will aid comfort and reduce the risk of stubbing them, especially when walking downhill.
- Be snug enough to stop the foot from moving within the boot. This will help to combat blisters.
- Give appropriate support to the ankle without impairing its natural movement.
- Ensure that whilst walking, the heel does not lift within the boot. Again this may cause blisters.
- Ensure that the boot doesn’t pinch, or have any nagging pressure points.
Some of these problem areas can, potentially, be eliminated if the boot is laced correctly.
Remember: Walking boots, especially leather ones, need time to ‘break in’, they rarely feel like carpet slippers immediately!!
Remember: Boots come in all shapes and sizes. Feet come in all shapes and sizes, and usually one foot is bigger than the other….
… allow plenty of time for the correct boot to be selected – it could be the difference between a pleasant walking experience and a nightmare!!
Fitting Tips
There are many different ways of checking whether a boot fits, or not. Here is a very simple way guide to get you started:
Always try both boot on, preferably with a pair of walking / thick socks. Ideally they should be the same as the ones that you intend to use with the boots.
- Place the boot on the foot = DO NOT lace it up!
- Push your foot forward towards the front of the boot, so that your toes are just touching the inside edge.
- If you can put 1 fingers between your heal and the inside edge of the boot, then the length is satisfactory.
- Lace the boot ensuring that there is sufficient support.
- If in doubt, refer to points above under “Will the Boots fit?”.
