Footwear must be suitable for the activity undertaken.
A suitable pair of Boots should:
- Be supportive to the ankle and the foot itself.
- Protect the foot from damage, e.g. bruising and abrasions.
- Give adequate grip on rough or slippery ground.
- Be flexible enough to allow comfort whilst walking.
- Keep the foot dry (where applicable) and cool.
Boots usually come in on e of the following three matrials:
Leather
Advantages: Generally stiffer, more durable, greater support, more waterproof (only if treated).
Disadvantages: Requires more frequent care and maintenance.
Usage: More demanding, and wetter conditions.
Fabric
Advantages: Usually lighter, more immediately comfortable, broader spectrum of usage.
Disadvantages: Not waterproof, unless lined with a membrane.
Usage: Summer rambles, street hiking, casual wear.
Fabric with Waterproof Membrane
Advantages: As fabric boots, but waterproof.
Disadvantages: Generally more expensive than fabric boots.
Usage: Ideal for the majority of walking needs, and mid-level backpacking.
Some leather boots have a waterproof membrane.
