As well as ahving more comfort space and headroom, the dome structure is generally more stable in winds, easier to erect, self-supporting, and movable once erected. They are lightweight, portable, and the flysheet is normally erected first so that in rain or sleet, the inner will not get wet and the user will have an instant shelter.
There are various types of Tent design - here are the most common:
Basic Dome: Effective use of space, stable in wind, lightweight and portable, small pack size, self-suppoting structure, flysheet-first erection, quick to erect.
Dome with Porch: As basic dome but with added feature of a small porch for storage of boots etc. Some may be inner first erection.
Dome with Extended Porch: Similar to basic dome with porch, howvever the porch area is substanially larger. Porch area has a "roof", and must be supported by a seperate guy rope. Ideal for backpacking, when greater amounts of equipment need to be stored outside the living area.
Tunnel design: Generous sleeping/living area, efficient use of inner space, stable in winds, may have between 2 and 4 hoops to support the structure depending on the size. Ideal for most camping needs where comfort is important.
Dome with Tunnel: A large dome type structure with a tunnel porch. Plenty of storage space, some may have two seperate living/sleeping areas, usually more than one entrance, perfect for family camping - the modern alternative to the frame tent.
Other types of Tent design:
Ridge Tent: Traditional design, non-efficeint use of inner space, little headroom, lightweight, inexpensive. Some ridge tents are extremely versatile and stable in winds, however they tend to be expensive.
Geodesic Design: Mainly used by the serious adventurer, and for expedition use, when foul weather is a potential threat. Poles are crossed for increased stability in high winds and extreme weather conditions. Usually feature a double porch for increased storage. May feature a hexagonal/geometric inner space.
Frame Tents: Traditional familt tents. Lots of space, with generous living quarters. Some may have a 'kitchen'. Very heavy, usually canvas. Erection is not for the sqeamish!
